How to Measure Outdoor Covers for Lights
The fastest path to an accurate replacement is to measure the existing cover before it is discarded. If it is already missing, measure the fixture opening, mounting points, and any remaining hardware.
For a globe, record the outside diameter of the fitter opening, the overall height and widest diameter, plus the distance from the opening to any lip or shoulder. Note whether the globe mounts with screws, a threaded fitter, a twist-lock connection, or a retaining ring.
For a lens or refractor, measure length, width, depth, and wall thickness where possible. Photograph the cover from several angles, including the ends, clips, tabs, screw holes, labels, and any molded part numbers. A tape measure placed next to the item in one photo provides useful scale.
Also check the fixture itself. A replacement cover cannot correct a damaged gasket, corroded latch, bent frame, or worn retaining hardware.
